Emily Dickinson's Home in Amherst, MA

"Go traveling with us"!
Her travels daily be
By routes of ecstasy
To Evening's Sea-

Bookish travels are some of my favorite travels - and Amherst, MA has been on my destination wish list for awhile because it's the hometown of the poet Emily Dickinson!

It took me awhile to get into Emily Dickinson - her poems can be very strange and unusual on a first read - but once I got into her unique rhythm I found so much to love! A few years ago I read the story of the publication of her poems in Ancestors' Brocades by Millicent Todd Bingham and was fascinated to learn more about her life and family.

There are two houses to explore at the Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst - The Homestead, where Emily lived with her parents and her sister Lavinia and The Evergreens where her brother Austin lived with his family right next door. We went through both with a small group and tour guide - they did an amazing job bringing Emily and her family to life, even weaving in some of her poetry. My cousin Becky is not nearly as much of an Emily fan as I am, but she really enjoyed it as well - and afterwards we got to visit a nearby yarn store WEBS that she had been excited about!

"Besides the autumn poets sing,
A few prosaic days
A little this side of the snow
And that side of the haze...

...Perhaps a squirrel may remain, My sentiments to share.
Grant me, O Lord, a sunny mind,
Thy windy will to bear!"
